Fake Patrotism, The Last Refuge of Scoundrels

September 29th, 2006 by Andy in What Is Patriotism?

A good post from a site I know little about, but lays into the BS of today’s ’superpatriots’ masquerading as Americans.

This Republican administration has discovered the perfect scam. They’ve found they can rob the country blind, break the nation’s laws, and lie their asses off—all while governing incompetently—and get away with it all as long as they invoke the holy words of “national security.”

The formula is simplicity itself: If someone asks why you did something, you reply, “It was necessary to keep America safe.” Similarly, if you are asked why you want to do something, then you can’t go wrong with “It is necessary to keep America safe” or some Fox-tested alternative, such as “It is necessary to fight America’s enemies.”

In other words, fake patriotism is working out very nicely for the G.O.P.

How unfortunate, though, that it’s socially unacceptable to come out and publicly say, for instance, that Dick Cheney and the others are only acting when they wax patriotic and claim to be fighting our enemies and working to make America stronger. The reality is that they’re nothing but profit-driven businessmen—and crooked ones at that. If only society could declare that the thugs in the White House are not even politicians, definitely are not leaders, and certainly do not have our best interests at heart.

Let’s face it—they owe their allegiance to the people and companies with whom they do business. Period.
